Didn’t they do WELL!
Starting on 10th April, after three incredibly arduous days, Ben Wakefield and friends (including Snowy, a life-sized 25kg dummy that definitely didn’t stay 25kg in the Scottish weather, sporting the names of 14 friends lost to suicide) completed an extraordinary challenge.
They walked across Scotland from Fort William to Inverness, raising money for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
Battling the elements, long distances and some seriously challenging terrain, the team pushed through not just physically, but mentally. There were no complaints, no friction, just a shared purpose and a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve, why they were doing this challenge and what it would mean for so many people who are struggling with their mental health.
Along the way, they met others who shared their own stories of loss from suicide, a reminder of just how important this cause is.
The final day was the toughest by all accounts, covering the longest distance and the hardest terrain but stopping was never an option. Reaching the finish line (and then tackling ‘the steps’…yes steps up to Inverness Castle, at the end of the Great Glen Way!) was a huge moment.
Ben said:
“We knew we had really achieved something and what kept us going was knowing that over 100 people believed we could do it and had sponsored us to complete the challenge, and there was no way we were going to let them down.”
Smashing their original £1,000 target, they are now approaching £3,500 with Gift Aid which is an incredible result.
